| Air Economics’ methodology for this survey was to ask a representative sample of airlines what their attitude was regarding some well-known technology upgrades for a given group of airplanes. Air Economics asked airline personnel, who through their participation in industry activities, are known to have insider knowledge of their respective airlines’ position. The objective of this analysis is to determine the compelling reasons for airlines to upgrade their avionics systems and to determine if airlines are making budgetary commitments to accomplish this. A secondary purpose of the analysis is to determine what other factors will influence avionics upgrades in the long term. The analysis focuses primarily on the so-called retrofit market, but in some cases, pertinent references and assertions are made to newer aircraft types – particularly airplanes, such as the B-757, B-767, later model B-737s, later MD-80 series and later Airbus 300 and 310 models. The aircraft included in this analysis are the B-727, B-737 (200,300,400 and 500 series), B-747 (100, 200 and 300 series), DC-9 (all series), DC-10 (all series), MD-80 (all series), A300B2 and B4 (analog) and the F100. The following graphs represent the results of our Classic Cockpit Upgrade Survey.
